நேபாளத்தில் சமூக ஊடக தடை எதிர்ப்பு போராட்டம் வன்முறையாக மாறி, நாடாளுமன்றக் கட்டிடம் தீக்கிரையானது.

சமூக ஊடக தளங்களான YouTube, X (Twitter), WhatsApp உள்ளிட்ட 26 தளங்களுக்கு நேபாள அரசு தடை விதித்தது. இதற்கு எதிராக ஆயிரக்கணக்கான இளைஞர்கள் (Gen Z) தலைநகர் கத்த்மாண்டுவில் பெரிய அளவில் போராட்டத்தில் ஈடுபட்டனர்.

போராட்டம் வேகமெடுத்து, போராட்டக்காரர்கள் நாடாளுமன்றம் செயல்படும் International Convention Centre வளாகத்துக்குள் புகுந்தனர். அங்கு அவர்கள் தீவைத்து, கட்டிடத்தை முற்றிலும் புகையால் சூழ்ந்தனர்.

மனித உரிமை அமைப்புகள், “மக்களின் சுதந்திர உரிமையை அடக்க முயன்றதே இத்தகைய வெடிப்பு சம்பவத்திற்கு வழிவகுத்தது” என தெரிவித்துள்ளன.

In Nepal, the ongoing protests against the government’s social media ban turned violent, as demonstrators set fire to the parliament building.

The government had recently imposed a ban on 26 major social media platforms including YouTube, X (Twitter), and WhatsApp. Thousands of young protesters, known as Gen Z protesters, poured onto the streets of Kathmandu demanding the ban be revoked.

As the protests escalated, demonstrators stormed the International Convention Centre—the building where parliament sessions are held—and set it ablaze. Thick black smoke covered the entire complex, creating panic across the capital.

Death Toll

According to international media reports, at least 19 people have been killed so far. Hundreds of others have been injured and are receiving treatment in hospitals.

Prime Minister Resigns

Following the violent protests and widespread unrest, Nepal’s Prime Minister has reportedly resigned from his position.

Nepal has been struggling with corruption, political instability, and an economic crisis.

The government justified the ban claiming that “false information and violence-inciting content” were being spread on social media.

However, the youth accused the government of suppressing freedom of speech and silencing public voices.
